Shades of Truth Theatre was founded in 2003 to address the lack of truth telling in theatre and film related to the black experience. We offer new and veteran playwrights of color an opportunity to showcase their uncompromising voice.
Our mission, at Shades of Truth Theatre, is to inspire, inform and empower our audiences with shows that stimulate, agitate and activate.
We are currently in pre production for the following shows
After Midnight: King’s Powerful Rebuke of the Vietnam War
Black Wall Street
Rainy Day Blues -Alberta Hunter Younger Years
Peace Speaks- Letters of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
Noble Lofton- Buffalo Soldier
I See Freedom- The Story of Harriet Tubman
Whistle in Mississippi: The Lynching of Emmett Till
We are also interested in developing new plays about the unsung heroes of the African American Experience included but not be limited to
Benjamin Banneker
Paul Robeson
Sojourner Truth
Nat Turner
Barbara Jordan
Shirley Chisholm
Denmark Vesey
Black Panthers
And many others who are not as well known
,
As a true, grassroots organization, the company's intent is to continue to build relationships with local independent businesses and social organizations who understand the need for artistic expression. We also believe in collaborating with other theatre groups like Voza Rivers’/ New Heritage Theatre Group.
With your support Shades of Truth Theatre would like to re visit prisons and correctional facilities such as Rikers’ Island, Sing- Sing, and Eastern Corrections and other institutions that often struggle to bring positive programs such as ours to their populations.
The funds raised in this campaign will be used toward:
Building portable sets to travel with
Upgrading costumes for all shows
Increasing budget for public relations and advertising
Covering cost for rehearsal and performance space
Actor compensation
Administrative Cost
