Berkeley Lab’s Berkeley Lab’s Biosciences Area Office ( has an opening for a Safety Coordinator. The Safety Coordinator will support the mission of the Biosciences Area Berkeley Operations Center (BSBK), Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL), University of California (UC), and Department of Energy (DOE), which includes performing work safely in a manner that ensures protection of employees, the public, Laboratory assets and the environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in working with Biosciences researchers and staff to help them work safely within the Integrated Safety Management (ISM) plan.

This position will provide general oversight and support of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) functions to research groups within BSBK divisions located at different sites in West Berkeley and on the LBNL main campus. The Safety Coordinator will act as a liaison between the LBNL EH&S Division, line management, and research groups in the BSBK ensuring clear understanding, communication and compliance with policies and procedures.

What You Will Do:
• Support line management in the execution of their safety responsibilities and help integrate safety into all work activities.
• Promote a safety culture in the operation center where everyone takes responsibility for their own safety and looks out for the safety of others.
• Advise line managers and implement safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all aspects of LBNL and Biosciences Area environment, safety and health (ES&H) requirements.
• Help BSBK employees achieve compliance with LBNL requirements by assisting them in understanding and correctly navigating the often-complex framework of permits and authorizations.
• Provide guidance and support to researchers in areas such as waste handling, interpretation of environment, safety and health regulations, implementation of written and web-based requirements, implications of significant modifications in procedures or equipment, resolution of occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, and other ES&H issues.
• Partner with researchers, operations staff, and managers to implement the Work Planning and Control (WPC) System for their respective activities.
• Manage the WPC program needs of the BSBK to ensure continuous compliance of all research programs and initiatives, including updates, modifications, and development of new research activities.
• Coordinate with line management, project and activity leads to ensure that all work is planned, documented, and authorized in a timely manner.
• Serve as a point-of-contact for all Ops Center staff regarding the implementation and interpretation of ES&H policies, procedures, and programs.
• Participate and give safety-related presentations at Division Safety Committee and other meetings as necessary.
• Perform an ongoing review of work with operations center staff to identify hazards that may require inclusion of new standards in the ES&H standards set for LBNL.
• Manage the safety-related corrective action process. This includes ensuring that the appropriate Corrective Action Tracking System (CATS) item is assigned to the correct individual, addressed, and corrected as scheduled, and closed in the system.
• Participate in the annual operations center self-assessment by participating in the development of objectives, writing and coordinating the approval of the annual assessment report, and ensuring that findings are entered into CATS and closed on schedule.
• Support the investigation of incidents, including injuries, accidents, and other safety and environmental incidents.
• Provide safety oversight for orderly decommissioning of a departing PI's laboratory space.
• Participate in the formulation of safety policy to encourage and facilitate division safety culture.
•  Participate in safety walkthrough with division management, Berkeley site office managers and other state and federal agencies.
• Participate in the Biosciences Ergo Advocate program developing area ergo advocates and supporting research groups in the Berkeley Operations Center.

Qualifications & Requirements
What is Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or a related technical field with 5 years relevant work experience, or Master’s degree and 1-3 years of experience.
• Experience in a research environment with the coordination, planning and review of research projects, or experience with aspects of safety, audits and inspection, incident investigation, or ergonomics.
• Familiarity with a highly regulated research environment, including an understanding of DOE and LBNL policies and procedures.
• Experience in compliance monitoring with respect to technical or scientific applications.
• Ability to work efficiently with project and activity leads, researchers, and operations staff to collaborate on the development and update of WPC activities and facility plans.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate policy and procedures in a manner that is relatable to individuals within the research community.
• Excellent time management skills and ability to manage multiple projects at once.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of team members and stakeholders, including scientists, researchers, technicians, and students, as well as operations and administrative staff.
• Proven planning, prioritization, and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative, use sound judgment, and provide solutions to ensure results.
• Experience with computer systems, Microsoft Office software, databases, and Google applications.
• Excellent oral communication and written skills, including the ability to compile information on complex subjects and issues in presentation form appropriate for the research community and safety committee.
• Understanding of other ongoing research programs or initiatives across the Biosciences Area.

• This is a full time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
